So this weird thing happened. I dropped Sof at the bus stop one morning, and went back to my house. All of the sudden Em was there. She said, “I wanted to leave a little gift for Adrienne for her last day of High school”. Ummm, okay. I didn’t even think about that. That’s mighty nice. So then we started talking and drinking our coffee because we talk to much and can’t make anything quick. Then Adrienne came home. She opened her gift (an MSU Tervis) and made some coffee and sat down to talk to us.
And then all of the sudden I was like, “OMG YOU ARE DONE WITH HIGHSCHOOL!!! YOU WILL NOT GO TO SCHOOL NEXT WEEK. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN???” I was very cool about it all.
Our district does this thing where they invite graduates to go back and visit their elementary school at a prescribed time. They walk the halls and say hi to their old teachers and the current students clap for them.
I am not an actual fan of this because it is dumb that you aren’t IN elementary school still. I do not need a reminder that you look like a grown ass woman sitting on your precious library rug where Mr. Shaw used to read to you from darling little picture books.
There was no more time for denial. This was a real thing happening. Graduation was on a Sunday night at 7pm. Kinda awkward timing. Especially since it was almost an hour away from our house. We decided to have dinner before. This worked out great because we were able to do all our pictures before hand. Everyone was super happy when I made them find a tree and a grassy patch between the Chili’s parking lot and a highway.
When I was trying to decide on a graduation gift, I knew it would be an experience not an item. That’s who Adrienne is, she prefers experiences over stuff. I started looking into getting tickets to see Hamilton. I knew she would love to see it, and it’s so iconic it would be a great memory in the future. Of course, Em was thinking the same thing! Once we talked about it we couldn’t go back. We decided we would give her the “gift” but not buy the tickets until we could all talk about logistics together. Stay tuned because that will have it’s own blog post. Epic story/weekend. Anyhoo, Em made a crafty little rhyming book that told her at the end she was going to see Hamilton. She dun lost her mind.
So fun, and the exact right thing for her.
Adrienne has many friends that go to one of the other high schools in our district. That school was having their graduation before ours, and Adrienne had to be there early anyway, so she was able to meet up and take some pictures!
It was a nice ceremony, but a huge venue, so hard to see anything!
I now have a graduate. She’s successfully completed the first 13 years of her education, and she’s headed on to the next phase of life. Making us proud since 1998.
